The Flying Shepherd
NEW DOCS
The lives of a group of Romanian shepherds change when a hang-gliding business opens near their pastures. The German owner-operators and the shepherds maintain an uneasy peace: sheep wander onto the landing strip and the gliders scatter them. The shepherds sit, talk, and sleep in the shade. The wind blows and it starts to rain. The sky clears. A glider lands, and a shepherd walks to meet it. This observational short, reminiscent at times of the seminal 1929 documentary Regen (Rain) in its study of weather, brings the bucolic life of rural Romania into collision with the growing number of foreign investors who began to flow into the country after the fall of Nicolae Ceausescu. As these two groups of people make sense of each other, interesting compromises arise. The film’s final shot, beautiful in its sweep, is a testament to these interactions. AK
