The Gleaners and I

Thematic Hybrid: A New Film Form Curated by Mary Lea Bandy

A personal journey through unscreened corners of France, from farm fields and vineyards to city markets, the film addresses the topic of gleaning, or the practice of peasants gathering leftovers after the harvests. An artist such as Varda is a gleaner, creating work from found subjects or objects, and her interviews with fellow gatherers compose an ode to the edges of modern society. Witty and fascinating, this hybrid film teaches one as much about the shapes of potatoes as it does about poor folk and loneliness, about the heart of an artist and the sharp eye of the observer.
