The Ground We Won

NEW DOCS
In the tiny farming town of Reporoa, New Zealand, a community rugby squad vows to come back from a losing season and go undefeated. For the members of the team, the scrum is a few hours’ reprieve from the toil of dairy farming, and from lives complicated by aging parents, single fatherhood, and a drought. The traditional pre-game huddle—a prolonged group embrace—is proof of the game’s power to foster an intense spirit of community. And the obligatory post-match hard-drinking sessions—in the locker room, on the away-game bus, and in the pub—are where rituals of manhood are performed and passed down. Photographed in beautifully stark black and white, the film delves into a few individual backstories but keeps the focus on the team: Can the Reporoa Rugby Club come through with a season to remember?
