After the dismantling of apartheid and the election of Nelson Mandela as president of South Africa, Bishop Desmond Tutu and others were assigned the troubling task of serving on the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC). The Commission’s task was to unearth answers about atrocities committed under apartheid and, in doing so, attempt to provide some measure of peace for both the victims of crimes and the perpetrators.
