The Guguletu Seven
NEW DOCS
After the dismantling of apartheid and the election of Nelson Mandela as president of South Africa, Bishop Desmond Tutu and others were assigned the troubling task of serving on the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC). The Commission’s task was to unearth answers about atrocities committed under apartheid and, in doing so, attempt to provide some measure of peace for both the victims of crimes and the perpetrators. One of the first cases to come before the Commission surrounded the murders of the Guguletu Seven—young black men labeled as “terrorists” by Cape Town police, but killed under highly suspicious circumstances. Gripping and compelling, The Guguletu Seven revisits the early morning shootings that took place in 1986 and traces the efforts of five investigators for the TRC as they uncover a gruesome web of lies, manipulation, cover-ups and conspiracy.
