The Last Archer

NEW DOCS

Spanish painter Alberto Manrique de Lara Díaz was a founding member of the Archers of Contemporary Art, or LADAC (Los Arqueros del Arte Contemporáneo), an influential group of artists based in the Canary Islands in the 1950s whose modern approach to artmaking ran counter to Franco’s oppressive regime. In The Last Archer, Alberto’s life story is vividly illustrated and richly scored by his granddaughter, director Dácil Manrique de Lara. When her grandfather has a stroke, Dácil returns home after a 23-year absence with hopes of restoring his lost memories. Using family photographs and diaries, Super 8 home movies, personal reflections, and fanciful animation, Dácil makes the film with the intention of presenting it to her grandfather as a gift, but in re-presenting his life and artistic vision she finds that she is healing her own past and present wounds.  ER
