Eighteen-year-old Johana is a high school senior with university on the horizon. The future she longs for promises to take her away from home, but her family depends on her to help care for her younger sister, who has autism and is prone to explosive outbursts. In this subtle portrait, we watch Johana feel her way along the edge of change, balancing feelings of responsibility against a widening prospect of opportunities. Her story develops through conversations with friends, exchanges with her parents, and most poignantly, tender moments with her little sister, in which their profound love for one another is clear. The Other One poses gentle questions about family dynamics as it looks at how the demands of one member impacts the others. Without judgment, and without diminishing the weight carried by all, the film focuses in on a stoical older sister and the expectations that pull at her with sensitivity and restraint.  ST
