The Prison in Twelve Landscapes

Thematic The Weight of a Question: Documentary and the Art of Inquiry
The Prison in Twelve Landscapes opens with a nighttime drive. As we see city streetlights flicker and reflect off windows and fireworks erupt in the distance, we hear unseen people connecting by phone. There is distance and longing in their voices as they describe their affection and support of one another. The lights come up to reveal that we are on a bus with adults and children traveling to see their loved ones. Brett Story’s dynamic film considers the imprint of incarceration by observing its marks on people and places beyond prison walls. Exquisitely photographed, this collection of twelve distinct stories provides a kaleidoscopic view of the sprawling effects of the penal system. As evident in the opening scene, Story finds creative ways to shift perspective and mine for deeper meaning. ST
