The Queen and I

NEW DOCS

Two Iranian women forced into exile under radically different circumstances converge in this simple and moving documentary by award-winning director Nahid Persson Sarvestani. Using a mix of archival footage and voice-over, Sarvestani recounts her exile from Iran as a young revolutionary caught up in the dangerous complexities of the Shah’s, and later Khomeini’s, regime. She juxtaposes snippets of this personal experience with the public spectacle of the monarchy she once sought to overthrow—namely, the coronation of Queen Farah Diba Pahlavi and, later, the deposing of her husband, the Shah of Iran. Invoking their shared experience of exile, Sarvestani appeals to Pahlavi for a personal interview, which she is granted. The roles of interviewer and interviewee reverse poignantly at times throughout the film, as Sarvestani struggles with the growing affection she unexpectedly feels for Pahlavi and her need to ask difficult questions.  WFM
