The Revolution Will Not Be Televised
NEW DOCS
Part thriller, part unique historical document, The Revolution Will Not Be Televised is a filmmaker’s dream come true. Imagine two Irish TV documentarians, Kim Bartley and Donnacha O’Briain, shadowing Venezuela’s president/folk hero Hugo Chavez as he attempts to push through with his revolutionary reforms. That’s exciting enough, right? Wrong. See what happens when the filmmakers find themselves in Miraflores, Venezuela’s White House, during a massive march organized by the ruling class (including the private owners of five of the six TV stations) and disgruntled military officers turns into a coup d’etat. By nightfall, Hugo Chavez surrenders as a hostage in order to spare the bombing of the presidential palace. As he leaves, he turns to the camera and coolly declares: “I’ll be back.” And he was. And it’s on tape! If mainstream media’s monochromatic rendering of those roller coaster days is disturbing, then prepare for a political explosion of colors, thrills, and emotions. RD
