Jean Painlevé was a great scientific filmmaker. He would often make two versions of a film—the hardcore science versions for research and the delightful, often hilarious, poetic short he made for public consumption, for which he wrote the narration. Painlevé had a profoundly imaginative sensibility and a magical eye. A delight.
