In Macedonia, the Roma community’s self-representation for the camera takes the form of performance. With the music score of a Fellini movie (indeed, the soundtrack uses music by Nino Rota), an over-the-top visual texture, and a series of extroverted characters, this documentary pushes through to a hyper-reality all its own. Beware of genies, dervishes, vampires, and at-home circumcisions: this film is not for the squeamish.  NK
