The Silent Shore

NEW DOCS
In a house and garden full of memories, Aline and Pierre Dubois move through spaces—both visible and invisible—filled with traces of their long life together. Surrounded by tall trees and abundant foliage, their home in northern France appears to have emerged from the pages of a fairy tale. As Pierre and Aline go about their days, the famous fantasy author and his wife recount the way they met, their wedding, their children, their work, and the world they built for themselves. The story of their shared past and present would not be complete without acknowledging their continued grief at the loss of their daughter, who at seventeen killed herself after a failed romance. Lush details punctuate these tender accounts—the puff of smoke from a pipe, the purr of a cat, the way the morning light comes through a kitchen window, the scratch of pencil on paper—underscoring the potent associations of memory to physical place.
