The Window Cleaner

Thematic Documentary as Witness: Great Films of the Twentieth Century Curated by Mary Lea Bandy

The Window Cleaner is a charming U.S. Government Office of War Information short that presents the common man during the period of World War II, in the spirit of the earlier Autobiography of a Jeep of 1943. A window cleaner is followed on his rounds in New York, working his way up in his profession, literally and figuratively, from the basement to the top of the world, the perilous upper windows of the city’s skyscrapers where he hangs with the support of a single strap.
