The Doll

NEW DOCS

Iranian teenager Asal has a suitor. Only 14, she lives with her younger brother and single father, Alireza, in the cramped confines of the family photography studio. As Alireza grapples with whether or not to consent to the marriage, his extended family of aunts, uncles, and nephews chime in, sharing their perspectives on his parenting choices and their opinions on what it means to marry young. When Asal herself weighs in on the decision, revealing more about her relationships with her father and absent mother, a nuanced portrait of a young girl making her way toward womanhood emerges. At times both complex and unexpectedly witty, the film is an engaging story of family and of growing up and finding agency as a woman in modern-day Iran.  TJS
