To Know Her

NEW DOCS

At the age of 14, Natalie Chao lost her mother to clinical depression. Traces of her exist in old miniDV camcorder footage, some of which she herself shot. A decade later, To Know Her delves into the experiences of Natalie and her sister and father, who all hold onto their own expressions of love. Natalie articulates her frustration, grief, confusion, and longing in this elegiac and lyrical film that is sewn together by her own prose. There is a palpable desperation to uncover one more detail, a new revelation, anything that could draw her mother closer as Natalie stitches together old and new footage, all recorded on the same miniDV camcorder. As the presence of her mother emerges, Natalie receives the closure she was looking for all along.  KL
