To Live is Better Than to Die

NEW DOCS

The filmmaker spends a year filming a family of five in their modest home in rural China. All except the eldest daughter have AIDS. Without drama or sentimentality, with gentleness and restraint, the film chronicles their lives as they await the inevitable. They dress, cook, clean, do their work, and take care of each other. The mother dies. The father does his best to cope. The children grow in their individualized uniqueness. The seasons pass. A film that could have been dismal and depressing is moving and beautiful. A story of love in the everyday.  DP
