Tootie’s Last Suit

NEW DOCS

The rich tradition of Indian masking by African Americans in New Orleans Mardi Gras has a history rooted in African culture and close ties to early years of settlement by the French. For over 50 years Tootie Montana was the revered chief of chiefs as he fashioned a different, elaborately ornamented suit to represent the Yellow Pocahontas tribe for Mardi Gras “parading.” Recognized as a Master Traditional Artist by the NEA and world-renowned for his designs that fueled the cultural pageantry and significance of New Orleans, he was the focal point of a rich sense of community beyond the French Quarter that most revelers and tourists never knew.  DRP
