Twelve Disciples of Nelson Mandela

NEW DOCS

A personal journey of reconciliation. The director’s stepfather, B. Pule Leinaeng (“Lee”), was an African National Congress (ANC) foot soldier who sacrificed his life for the freedom of his country. Woven together with archival footage as well as re-enactments featuring young South African actors, the film chronicles the radicalization of ANC activists such as Lee, who decide that the only way to fight encroaching apartheid is to exile themselves abroad. The story brought to life here is at once Pan-African and personal. When Lee arrives in the U.S. and meets the filmmaker’s mother, politics hit home. The loneliness of exile, the urgency of political upheavals, and the poignancy of family find voice in this multifaceted documentary.  SW
