War/Dance
NEW DOCS Thematic Africa Stories Curated by Nancy Buirski
For the children of the Patongo refugee camp in the most perilous region of Northern Uganda, dancing is a kind of salvation and music soothes the wounds inflicted by years of war. For the past 20 years, Northern Uganda has been at war with the Lord’s Resistance Army, a rebel group that has devastated the lives of countless families, abducting children as young as five to join their ranks. In this compassionate, visually nuanced film, several children share their tormenting accounts of lives devastated, bodies assaulted, and family members lost. And yet, the stories of the Acholi children do not end there. As they prepare to compete in Uganda’s annual National Kampala Music Festival, in synchronous collaborations that become absolute cinematic grace, they bask in moments of hope, peace, and even joy.
