We Are Pat

Invited

Filmmaker Ro Haber reckons with their complicated love for Pat, the androgynous Saturday Night Live character played by Julia Sweeney who became a pop culture phenomenon in the 1990s. Once embraced by Haber as a source of recognition and strange comfort, Pat now reads differently, carrying a legacy that sits uneasily within the shifting boundaries of trans representation and comedy. Rather than dismissing the controversial character outright, Haber embarks on a personal and communal inquiry, inviting trans comedians, performers, and critics to unpack Pat’s cultural impact and reimagine the character through today’s lens. Haber also invites Sweeney herself, Pat’s creator, into the conversation. Infused with a ’90s visual sensibility—collage, archival clips, and candy-colored graphics—the film revisits, and thoughtfully interrogates, iconic SNL moments. At once playful and probing, We Are Pat asks urgent questions about authorship, nostalgia, and who ultimately gets to define a joke. PB
