We Met in Virtual Reality

NEW DOCS

This visually arresting feature immerses the audience in the world of VR to show the genuine connections that can be forged within virtual environments. As director Joe Hunting’s filmmaker avatar participates on the platform VRChat, he trains his camera on Jenny, who discovers community by teaching American Sign Language, and two couples, DustBunny and Toaster, DragonHeart and IsYourBoi, whose burgeoning romances develop over the course of the film. In vérité scenes and thoughtful interviews, Hunting navigates conversations around friendship, isolation, mental health, grief, and love. The film transports the viewer to an array of stunning places in VRChat, foregoing discussions about the mechanics of the technology or the monetization of the service. Instead, We Met in Virtual Reality, filmed entirely during the Covid-19 pandemic, focuses on the freedom found in virtual spaces, on the ways people find one another and embrace their true selves.  ST
