What would the drop know about that?
NEW DOCS
This haunting short film explores the relationship between a custodial crew and the majestic parliamentary building in their care, the Reichstag in Berlin. With an atmospheric score and stunning visual imagery, the camera follows the custodians in their often balletic daily routine through the postmodern, impersonal space. Two of the cleaners describe their duties and impart surprising philosophies of work, society, and politics. The phrase etched on the Reichstag lobby floor—“What would the drop know about that, as it is being swept around?”—challenges the foreign-born Nihat, who painstakingly, almost lovingly cleans the stainless steel lettering he cannot comprehend. This stylized documentary invites us to contemplate a nation’s power set against the significance of the individual. DP
