Who Took the Bomp? Le Tigre on Tour

Invited

At one point in Kerthy Fix’s documentary, Le Tigre singer Kathleen Hanna reflects on the future of bands like hers: “I want other artists to be able to build on what we did—I don’t want it to go in the trash.” Although the film focuses on the 2004–2005 tour, Le Tigre remains relevant today, politically and musically. Its brand of electro-punk challenges the sexism and homophobia that still dominate the contemporary pop scene. Long-time feminist, punk idol, and riot grrrl trailblazer, Hanna is an utterly transfixing interview: whip-smart without rubbing it in your face, and funny without being exclusive. And the exuberant exploits of band mates Johanna Fateman and JD Samson make for some laugh-out-loud moments. But it is the live footage that really electrifies us and captures the essence of what makes Le Tigre such a great band. In their book, fun and activist are not mutually exclusive terms.  RM
