William Kunstler: Disturbing the Universe

Charles E. Guggenheim Emerging Artist Award - Honorable Mention 2009

NEW DOCS

The late attorney William Kunstler represented civil rights and anti-war activists, as well as accused terrorists and murderers. In William Kunstler: Disturbing the Universe, filmmakers Emily Kunstler and Sarah Kunstler explore their father’s life, using a blend of archival footage, photos, recordings, and home videos to create a portrait of a famous and controversial lawyer as well as of a father. Because of Kunstler’s participation in several high-profile cases, his family received bullets in the mail and feared the police and FBI rather than criminals. Although his daughters were born after Kunstler’s involvement with the Chicago 8, Wounded Knee, and Attica state prison, their film shows that they are more proud of their father’s activism than affected by his infamy.  CF
