Wounded Knee

Invited

In 1973 Native Americans from the Oglala Lakota Tribe seized the village of Wounded Knee in South Dakota, site of the last massacre of the Indian Wars. Their aim was to draw national attention to the desperate conditions on their reservations, where they feared an entire culture and way of life was being wiped out. “I was ready to do what it takes for change” recounts Madonna Thunder Hawk. For 71 riveting days the world watched as Native American protesters held off the federal government at gunpoint. Combining archival footage, photographs, and interviews with American Indian Movement (AIM) members Russell Means and Dennis Banks, among others, as well as with federal agents and government officials, filmmaker Stanley Nelson offers a gripping account of the events that led to the dramatic standoff on the Pine Ridge Reservation.  SM
