Une Journée d’Andrei Arsenevitch
NEW DOCS
In this cinematic homage, legendary documentarian Chris Marker turns his lens on the equally legendary feature filmmaker Andrei Tarkovsky. An examination of the central themes and visual motifs of Tarkovsky’s seven features, it seeks to further enhance the poetic elusiveness of his personal cinematic explorations of spirituality, sacrifice, love, and art. In addition, the film includes footage of Tarkovsky directing the complex, lengthy last shot of his final film, The Sacrifice, and painfully moving images of the filmmaker, near death, being reunited with his family. Tarkovsky once wrote that the “aim of art is to prepare a person for death, to plough and harrow his soul, rendering it capable of turning to good.” This remarkable film makes the viewer realize that Tarkovsky’s works of art prepared him for his own death.
