UNICEF Program: Secrets & Disclosures: Telling the stories of children in danger
Invited
As a former child soldier in Liberia, Spencer has been traumatized by the civil war in his country. Will his community accept him back following the terrible acts he was involved in as a combatant? Jacqueline is a young Rwandan woman living in isolation from her community after having been raped by a soldier during the civil war. How does she learn to live with her child and come to terms with the violent events she has experienced? Nisha, an 11-year old Indian girl living in a slum is often ill, but no one has told her why. Should her mother tell her that they are both infected with the HIV virus and that there is no cure for their disease? Duco Tellegen’s exquisitely shot intimate portraits of children reveal their personal strengths as they struggle with the impact of war and social stigma. These children’s capacity to cope with adversity teaches us the meaning of courage while raising profound questions about acceptance and forgiveness.
