Year of the Bull
NEW DOCS
Year of the Bull provides a powerful, even disturbing, inside look at high school football in America. Following Miami Northwestern High School’s Bulls through their entire 2001 football season, there is the good and bad, the highs and lows, of contemporary pre-collegiate sports. For many of these high school players, including Taurean Charles, Miami Northwestern’s preseason All-American linebacker, gridiron success can potentially carry them out of the inner city and into the limelight—but failure can almost feel like death itself. So, what will it be for the Bulls in 2001: life or death? Can they win the state championship? A national championship? Will Charles live up to his preseason hype? Does he have the time and the will to prepare for an SAT test that stands as his only barrier to playing big-time college football? All of these questions hang in the balance every single time the Bulls suit up to play, and they all get answered in this dramatic saga of life, liberty, and the pursuit of touchdowns. JJ
