Full Frame Documentary Film Festival Will Be Virtual in 2022

Durham, N.C. – December 8, 2021 – The 25th annual Full Frame Documentary Film Festival, a program of the Center for Documentary Studies (CDS) at Duke University, will be presented entirely online April 7–10, 2022.

Organizers of the Academy Award®-qualifying event cite the ongoing and unpredictable realities of the coronavirus pandemic as the primary factor for holding a virtual festival.

“Nothing can replace the magic of screening films together in a theater, yet we firmly believe the decision to stay online for one more year is the best choice for Full Frame at this time,” says Sadie Tillery, Full Frame’s artistic director and interim festival director. “The 2021 festival demonstrated that the Full Frame team can produce a meaningful virtual experience amid the constraints of this moment–one that matters to filmmakers, to audiences, and to us.”

Similar to the 2021 format, Full Frame is planning a dynamic festival that will include feature and short film screenings, filmmaker Q&As, and panel discussions. In addition, there will be a juried awards program offering cash prizes totaling more than $40,000.

“Full Frame has always been about showcasing exceptional films with stories that can inspire and connect audiences, even in a virtual landscape,” says CDS director Opeyemi Olukemi. ”We look forward to gathering together again in downtown Durham when it is safe to do so, but I know that the 2022 online festival will still be a great celebration of nonfiction film and artists.”

Olukemi was hired to lead CDS earlier this year and will spearhead the search for the next Full Frame festival director in the coming months.

Festival passes go on sale to the public in early March. For more information, including a Festival FAQ, please visit fullframefest.org.
